The absolute best food in town! Amazing steaks with daily appetizer and drink specials. If you're from a city the prices will come as a nice surprise too. Woollys bar drinks are wonderfully fresh ranging from Fresh Squeezed Margaritas and fresh Monitors to very well done Martinis and Old Fashioneds, all at a very reasonable price. The Dinner staff is well informed and friendly and kid friendly as well.

Hmmm I'm on the fence with my review, let's say 3.5 since I did love my walleye dinner, the prime rib special when requested medium-rare was actually well done, tough, dry and flavorless. However, our server and hostess, name Town is delightful. I was surprised she wasn't aware if their fish is wild caught or farm raised and yes there's a great difference from experience. Wild indeed is preferred. It did take an extended amount of time to find out this answer, before I fully committed on fish all together. I think product education is important to all staff. I can't be the only person who has nor will inquire on this. She returned to inform the walleye is wild caught but that the salmon is not. So, walleye it was and oooh my gosh I enjoyed it this second time around this week! It comes with a chipotle aioli, but I used it on my broccoli and baked potato and it was on point! I refused to use it on my walleye to avoid overpowering this incredible fish.

This is a great mom & pop restaurant with very friendly staff and excellent food. My husband had the prime rib and said it was perfect; cooked exactly as ordered and tasty. I had the chicken orzo bowl which I greatly enjoyed. It was just a little bit spicy, not too much. We didn't have the opportunity to try the desserts but they looked beautiful. If you're in Hot Springs, eat at Wooly's. You'll be glad you did.

i would have rated this as only 2 stars if based on service, but the food was honestly delicious, so i bumped it up to three. my boyfriend and i ate here on a recent afternoon after a visit to the mammoth site. it was nearby, and they advertised a house-made micro-brew, so we felt we couldn't go wrong, especially with an anticipated two hours of driving ahead of us. the restaurant decor itself is a bit outdated. the layout, also, is confusing. we entered into a door that took us into a dining room and bar that was adjacent to the host stand/main dining room. after we figured out that bit, we were seated. while our server was initially attentive, she disappeared after delivering our order (more on that later). the menu is fairly diverse and affordable, so kudos to them for avoiding being a ridiculous tourist trap, though they certainly have the potential to do so. my boyfriend went with the french dip, and i opted for soup and salad. his french dip was LOADED with thinly sliced roast beef, and the hand-cut accompanying fries were crispy, seasoned, and delicious. the jus was a great compliment. in the interest of preserving some of our funds, i opted for a cup of soup and a side salad. the soup of the day was a creamy asiago, and it absolutely delivered on flavor. it was creamy, thick, tangy, and just funky enough so that you knew you were eating asiago. my salad was a fairly average house salad, topped with honey mustard dressing. nothing extraordinary, but up to par. the house made beer, "woolly's western pale ale" was quite good, and better than any old average pale ale. service initially was warm and friendly without being overbearing. but that all changed after our food was delivered. our server was literally nowhere to be found, until i ventured to the restroom (located in the next dining room) and observed her tallying up her slips for the day. apparently she had been cut, and no longer gave a care to her final remaining table. giving her the benefit of the doubt, i sat back down. roughly 10 minutes later (a total of 15 since we had finished eating), i finally decided to flag down another server so we could pay our bill. instead of our original server delivering a) the bill and/or b) an apology for ignoring us, she instead shifted that responsibility to the server at least 20 years her junior, who apologized profusely for the error. the food: very good, and based on that alone, i would be back. the service: initially, and from what i observed in the dining room, generally good. perhaps we just had a uniquely poor experience. a note: there appears to be no actual manager, and the side dining room which was no longer being used was absolutely left in shambles. this place needs more people, better training, and higher expectations.

Well worth the visit for size/value/quality and made it great Enlightening evening, so I hope no one will resist visiting this treasure. Passing through while on a trip, but throughly enjoyed the food and prompt service. The Chicken Tortilla soup was appropriate size and seasoned, Walleye fish was cooked beautifully, chicken fried steak was lightly breaded, green beans seasoned wonderfully (and thats coming from a person who doesn't like bacon). Electra wine was a good choice to carry. Even met Vicky the owner and learned about a good event to come back for. :) Definitely will be returning whenever I come through again!

The food here was fine. It was solid, standard stuff, and most would find it better than average for"American" food in this part of the county. I ordered the Mount Rushmore Dipper, which is a bison burger topped with bacon, Swiss, and one onion ring au jus. I ordered the 1/4 pound patty, and, although the flavor was good, it was way overcooked. Not to be a snob, but bison doesn't have as high fat content and shouldn't be cooked that long. The bacon on the burger was crumbled crispy bacon, but it was too much, and too salty. The Swiss cheese had also been heated too long since it was starting to get crispy. While the jus was pretty tasty, you wouldn't need it if the bison weren't so overcooked and dry. The bun was well toasted, and therefore held up well to the jus. If the burger had actually been moist, it would've held up well to that. The "homemade" fries weren't special. They were just russet potatoes prepared with a standard cutter and thrown in a deep fryer. They probably weren't soaked or twice-fried as fries are supposed to be, since they were crispy, but completely brown. I wanted to like this place more since it was recommended by an employee at the nearby Mammoth Site attraction, seemed like a place frequented by locals, and is family-owned and operated, but the food was nothing special, and, though the woman who seated us was very friendly and pleasant, our waitress was rude. Not only was she very slow (which I could excuse due to busyness, except that people who arrived after us were serviced before us, and 10+ minutes for our order to be taken and 25+ minutes to receive our food is just too long), but she rolled her eyes and sighed when I asked her for our checks, and she slammed them in front of us when she brought them. She also turned her back on me when I was thanking her, because I was still being polite, even if she wasn't.

Stopped in for.lunch , had the French dip and their private summer beer. Excellent. Treated myself.to a piece of.key ljme.pie . Fantastic. After a day of.hiking the black hills I say this is the one place im gonna remember of the others. Its not that the food at the others was bad - it isn't Woolys is the place im gonna remember to hit if I ever make it back. Thats the type of place it is.

Loved the food, the Wooly in-house brew, and the service. Locally owned small town goodness! I had a steak and it was cooked to perfection. They offer a wide range of choices on the menu from appetizers, burgers, dinner entrees to dessert. If you find yourself hungry in Hot Springs give it a try.

My husband and I stopped in for dinner tonight. We waited about 15 minutes to get in. Once we were seated, it was another 15 minutes before we were waited on. We were wondering if we were going to be doing some waiting to get our food. However, once we had our drinks, we were able to place the rest of our orders pretty quickly and had our food within about 20 minutes of ordering it. My husband ordered an eight ounce sirloin. He said it was fairly good, but a little tough. I had the chicken fried steak, which was very tasty. We both had green beans. They were earthy in taste, but the addition of fried onions and some seasoning made them very enjoyable. The baked potato was pretty good. The butter was a little different than I am used to, but overall pretty good. Not a bad night of dining.

Very clean, bright, good views, modern. I had prime rib which was excellent, my wife had a steak, both prepared the way we asked. I had desert which was key lime pie and also very good. The owner helped Kim, our waitress, so we were very well taken care of. We were very pleased with our selection and would definitely dine here again.

On our way to Mt. Rushmore our bellies were rumbling and stopped by to see what they had to offer. The "craft beer" sign pulled me in, but I didn't really find any that were worth trying. I was with the whole family so we needed a place that had something for everyone and Woollys had something for everyone. My son got the chicken fingers and I opted for a burger. It was not the best burger I ate, but it did it jobs and filled my belly, the fries were really good though. If there were other places around I might have went, but hey it was "food" and it filled a need.

The reviews on Yelp looked good so we stopped by for dinner on a Saturday evening. It has a nice atmosphere that fits the location, right next to the Mammoth Dig. There are two sections to the place. We ate in the dinner room on the first level. The upper level appears to be a club or bar. Not quite sure. My wife and I had the pulled pork sandwich. Others in our party had the cheeseburger and burrito. Both commented that their dinners were good. The pulled pork was a little dry though, and the BBQ sauce was spicy. We asked for a wine list and the waitress pointed us to a folded card on the table that showed only the types of wine (Merlot, Cab, etc), but no specific one. So we had to go to the bar and ask what they carried. Don't go for the wine. Have the iced tea instead. In conclusion it's a typical restaurant in the area and the food is OK. I would recommend it since there's not much to choose from otherwise.

Food was okay and service was slow. There was 5 of us and food came out at different times after 40 minutes of waiting. Maybe caught them on an off night but was not impressed.

Absolutely amazing. Great food, great desert, and the house brewed beer was very good. Great staff as well!

This place appears to be hit or miss for me. The brewery's pale ale was very good. The spicy fried pickles were too. My husband got the cheddar chipotle aioli burger was really good along with his fries. I had the homemade chicken fried steak. It was too thin. The mashed potatoes with skin were decent. The white gravy was too bland. The green beans were too institutional. They were out of a can and tasted like it even though they were topped with fried onions. The staff was super attentive and welcoming. I'd sacrifice large portions for better good quality. We'll return for the burger selections for sure and a beer. Other than that, we'll pass.

From out of town looking for something good on Saturday night in hot springs. We put our name in and were told wait would be 20. We sat at the bar and I had a local pale ale which was pretty good. After 25 min we were seated and we waited about another 10 to get our orders in. I ordered 8 oz sirloin and my daughter ordered chicken strips. It took long time for food order. I was not asked if I needed any thing for my steak. Being from Iowa i know good steak and this was not it. Tough and med well should not be too pink. I gutted through it with the baked potato and green beans. Texas toast on the side looked pretty tough. My daughters fries looked like they fished them out of the bottom of the barrel. I was not asked if I needed anything more until my daughter ordered ice cream and I ordered key lime. I was looking forward to this since the meal was somewhat of a disaster. They were out. I got my bill and not only did I get billed again for my daughters drink (lemonade she ordered and paid for at the bar) but we also got billed for key lime and 2 ice creams. We fixed the bill and ducked out more than an hour and a half later. Two stars since the staff was friendly and the pale ale was good and it was a decent atmosphere.

Limited options for good food in this town, I tried Woolly's after reading reviews. Friendly staff, fair drink prices. Filet was very thin, but cooked right and only $16. I would have paid more for a better quality steak. Biggest problem was battling the flies the whole time for my food; they need to install restaurant insect control systems, staff offered to find a fly swatter........but who needs that experience?

Admittedly there is little to choose from in the small town of Hot Springs, SD. However, Woolly's is the exception. I enjoyed their signature burger the Birdie; great flavors and cooked just right. I also had their steak, which was cooked to perfection and had I bought it in Denver would have been three/four times as much. Heidi was an exceptional server and never missed a beat. I would recommend Woollys to anyone and everyone; great food, great price.

Went to Wooly's hoping for a buffalo steak. When we got there we were told that Buffalo was too expensive so they stopped serving it unless you buy the burger. I looked around on Yelp for another restaurant that might serve it. I was told that the other steak place I town wasn't a place they would recommend to anyone and that their food was very good. Ok, might as well forge ahead as the day was long. We asked about wings but were told that they stopped serving it because customers complained that they didn't cool them properly. He said that it took too long to cook frozen wings. This should have warned us about their professionalism and standards, but again..,hungry, long day... Wife and I ordered prime rib as we were assured it was great. One kid ordered a chimi, another a salad, another ribs and last one ordered teriyaki noodles with egg roll. Prime rib was ordered medium rare, came medium warm. It had too much salt as the rub and the meat was a little tough. Altogether, disappointing. If this was the good food in town, they saved us from certain hell at the other place. The chimichanga was just ok, my usually hungry 16 year old son left quite a bit behind. It was worse than he would let on, but he isn't one for a soliloquy. The remains looked like what I would imagine prison food might look like. My youngest did his best to get the teriyaki noodles down, but found them very salty. We opened the egg roll to find the inside pure mush. Disgusting and undercooked, clearly out of the frozen food aisle. My daughter found her salmon salad to be quite good, of course, this dish is fairly easy to handle. My other daughter's ribs looked ok, but tasted like they were frozen, cooked then reheated. Any sign of juiciness had gone bye bye in one if the steps getting them to our table. We had to ask for drink refills and also that they bus our table. When asked how everything was when I paid, I said so so. The young lady smiled and said ok and took my credit card. It's unfortunate that this small town probably has a captured audience so the attendance hides the reality of the quality of the service and food.

In a town filled with fast food, bar food, and diner fare, how exciting to find a GREAT steak and plenty of other options. The service is excellent and the kitchen served us quickly. Come during the day to enjoy unrivaled views of the Black Hills and be sure to choose from the specialty steaks.

OK, this place wins the award for fantastic customer service. We came here for the Sturgis motorcycle rally and our hotel was right next door to Woolly's. We had been riding all day long and got back to the rooms kind of late and went over to the restaurant to grab dinner. Well, we got there 30 minutes after closing, however the gal at the front told us to come on in and she'd get us something to eat. She brought out the biggest prime rib steaks I had ever seen. We were literally the only 5 guys in the building and they made sure we had a fantastic meal. I've never been treated so kindly at a restaurant. We ended up eating dinner there every night for the rest of our trip (though we made sure to get there well before closing, lol). Love this place!

My wife and I stopped by after a day touring the various sites in the area. The food is very good. Since we are from Southern California we stay away from the Mexican Food since we can get that cuisine at home. I had the prime rib and asked for it rare. It came as I wanted and it was very good. I love steak east of the Rocky's it is much more tender and tasty than what we get on the West coast. My wife had the sirloin. She also found it very good. The service was good and the family was working quite well. We also liked the local Spearfish beer they served and had both the porter and cream ale. Both were good. They would have rated better but the got my wife's order wrong. She asked for her steak rare and it came medium well, she asked for baked beans and got green beans. She would have sent it back but the food was really good. I would go back if I am in south Dakota.

Great food and the service was outstanding! The 1/2 pound burger and the pasta salad were both delicious and very reasonably priced! Best food we have had in Hot Springs!

Some of the nicest people you'll ever meet run this restaurant. The cuts are enormous and delicious. It's a family joint. If you're ever in town, trust me, you should eat all your meals right here.

Auction night! We attended a Pheasant Forever auction here...Ronnie was the auctioneer. The large selection of hors d'oeuvres were quite tasty and it was much better than having really badly prepared prime rib. Fun night!

Went to a motorcycle run and got back to Hot Springs late. They close at 9 pm and we arrived at 9:20. They went out of their way to help us and get our group fed. They are the nicest restaurant around. The food is great with large portions. The prime rib was cooked just right. Definitely going back.

Can't really say anything good about the place. Bottles of wine on display everywhere. But no wine menu. Luckily the bartender, although totally unfamiliar with wine, was willing to learn and was helpful. The waitress was a different story. All she did was point us to the "Black Box" wines listed on the back of the napkin dispenser. Food was blah. Service terrible (I ordered a double espresso and shot of amaretto for desert. I got cold espresso in a paper cup. Luckily the bartender fixed it). I made sure to tip the bartender.

Restaurant was recommended by the desk clerk at our motel down the street. We were not disappointed. Although my wife, her brother, and I are not big steak eaters I ordered the ribeye and they ordered the prime rib. All at great prices. My steak was pretty good...not spectacular but satisfying. Prime rib was terrific (I snuck a taste) and incredibly reasonable. Sides were great...special green beans and small baked potatos. Service was very good and. Didn't know what the house wine was, but it tasted like Black Box, which is a favorite of mine, and was reasonable. We got in at 6:30 on a Sat night and had no problem getting seated. All in all a very good dining experience

Great Mexican food after awesome mammoth tour next door. Great service and quick! Not sure what the complaints were about concerning service. Salsa was yummy. Guacamole not. On a fabulous South Dakota road trip, this was a great, satisfactory lunch for all of us before we head home via Denver to Philadelphia. .

  • Rachael S.

My brother and I stopped here for lunch after a visit to the mammoth excavation next door (which, by the way, was pretty cool). I was not expecting much, but I have to say that my steak salad was quite good and reasonably priced. The steak was nice-sized chunks of tender beef, cooked just as I ordered it, and the salad greens were actually green (not that nasty, almost-white iceberg stuff). My brother had a large portion of fried fish that he said was tasty.

Woollys is the best in the area. A short distance from the Mammoth Museum, this kitschy, friendly, clean, affordable place is a great meal with a great staff. Indeed, these fine folks include Mr. Peter Burleigh who took the trouble to return my forgotten credit card via USPS. Thanks again for the good meal and service.

You know, for a town that attracts a lot of tourists, Hot Springs sure rolls up the sidewalks at night. We had a hard time finding a place to eat after 8:30 pm on a weeknight. After being turned away at a local steakhouse, we ended up here. I was dubious when we walked in--the furniture was an odd mishmash, there were activities crammed into every corner (Rock Band, Hoops-shooting, etc), and the menu was the kind of "A little of every major ethnic cuisine" that usually sends me running far, far away. But we were pleasantly surprised. Six of us dined, covering a lot of the menu (and getting Mexican, Italian, and American fare) and we were all pretty happy with our dishes. Service was friendly, even if they did get slammed by us (and everyone else looking for a place to eat in Hot Springs late that night) just before close. Definitely a solid option in Hot Springs. This place is tucked behind the Holiday Inn Express. And BTW, one corner of it is also a little coffee spot.

Ok food. Good attitudes. Horrible service. Took 35 min to get drinks, 40 min to get silver, 50 min to get food after returning dishes several times because it was wrong.
